Brighten Up the Front Door
Our front entry is dismal. It's not big. It's all brick and concrete and the front door.
It faces north, so it is very sunny and gets really hot.
And until now I've had the doormat, and two pots of geraniums and swept it once a week.
But I had a fern that needs a home for winter, and a couple of empty planters that could be filled, and some seedlings that needed a home.
And a nice, new, cheerful doormat.
So the front porch has had a make-over.
The geraniums have been moved to the back yard, and in their place are two faux barrel planters, full of violas. They will do well there for the winter. They'll get enough sun without burning for the next few months. I love violas, they are so delicate and pretty and cheerful. First step in the make-over done.

The new doormat came from Aldi a few months ago and I had it in the shed. I loved the little bird, and the colours - blues are my favourite. Second step in the make-over done.
It was still a little bare or blank or something, so out came an old plant stand. It started life black, then I painted it white, and now it's back to black again. It needed something though, so I made a blue decal to put around the top tray. That was enough to lift it from plain and boring to bright and pretty.
The fern found a new home in a pale grey pot and is sitting on the top of the made-over planter. A splash of bright green to lift the front porch. It should be fine there for the winter. It will be protected from frosts and will get enough soft light, and next summer I'll move it to the backyard again. Third step in the make-over done.

Over Easter weekend our plan is to take everything off the porch, and pressure wash the concrete and steps. That will make a big difference to the appearance. I'd like to tile it, maybe in slate, but that costs money. I'm looking out for cheap, or even better, free tiles and when I do, then that concrete will be gone.
The other chore for the Easter weekend is to paint the screen door. It was on the house when we moved in, and it is showing it's age. A can of black Rustoleum will give it a facelift and make it look like new, for around $17.
So while the front porch make-over isn't finished, it's almost done, and I'll update the photos as each step is completed.
